Java or Crab-Eating Macaque Monkey
Java or Crab-Eating Macaque
Macaca fascicularis
Geographic Distribution: Beside rivers, and coastlines, and farmland throughout Southeast Asia
Macaques are enormously successful as intelligent, omnivorous generalists. In addition to eating fruits, flowers, insects and eggs, Javas also swim and dive for shrimp and crayfish.
They live in groups containing several adults of both sexes and young with clearly defined pecking orders or dominance hierarchies.
All of the Monkey Jungle Javas are the descendants of six monkeys released here in 1933. We now have approximately 130. You can spot the dominant male, or leader, by looking for the large male who carries his long tail held up high.
